Silver Salmon Fly Fishing

May 10th, 2008

copy-of-600.jpg

When I think of Salmon on the fly rod I think Silvers (Cohoe).  The fishing typically gets good by mid to late july on some of our fly out fishing and mid aug. to the end of oct. on the Kenai peninsula.  In the right conditions they will take the fly very agressively.  I’ve even had many oportunities to take these fish on top water.  Bunny flies, articulated flies, maribou flies, leaches, spoon flies, ect. are just a few patterns that will work well for these fish.  If you are interested in matching your skills with these fish make sure you contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and we’ll get you lined up.

Cordova Fishing

May 9th, 2008

I hope that everyone is enjoying their spring and getting a line wet now and then.  I will be out of town for the next week steelhead, searun cutthroat, rainbow trout, and dolly varden fishing in Cordova.  The fishing should be good unless the rivers get blown out and it is calling for rain throughout the week.

It’s that time in Alaska!  I haven’t been able to get out and fish to much due to the weather and work but that’s all over for now.

If you’re looking for a fishing trip in south central Alaska this season we’d be happy to Hook you up.  Check out our website at www.driftingonthefly.com  or you can email me at scott@driftingonthefly.com

55 degrees and fishing

April 23rd, 2008

This spring rainbow ate a Murrays Hellgrammite #10.
Today I got off work, removed my studded tires and got my all terrains back on the truck. After I got my chores done I found time to go and explore a stream here in Anchorage. Ship Creek is a well known Salmon run river that holds a few trout too. I didn’t spend much time fishing it but it did produce a couple of small rainbows. I was using a Murray hellgrammite size 10, dead drifting it. That fly seems to produce more fish for me than any other in my fly box! I don’t know if it is confidence or what..

I’m moving back down to the Kenai peninsula next week to get gear ready for the upcoming season. Spots are booking up fast so if your interested in a 2008 Drift Boat Fishing trip get your spots soon. We hope everyone is enjoying the spring and we look forward to hearing from you.

Winter Keeps hanging on

April 17th, 2008

The days are getting longer and there are a few bears starting to poke their heads out on the peninsula.  This is an exciting time of year for me but winter just keeps hanging around.  In Anchorage we were blessed with another 3-4″ of snow last week.  Though it didn’t hang around we keep getting hit with cold weather.  I plan to get out a little this weekend and try to chase a stealhead down on the Kasilof River.

For information on the upcoming season feel free to check out my website at www.driftingonthefly.com or email me at scott@driftingonthefly.com.

2008 Homer Winter King Salmon Derby

March 29th, 2008

copy-of-hunting-069.jpgcopy-of-hunting-068.jpgcopy-of-hunting-064.jpg

Due to bad weather the winter salmon derby was delayed until this past sunday.  There were 792 fishermen in the derby and 92 fish caught.  The odds don’t sound very good but there were 20 more fish caught this year than last year.  I fished with some good friends from around the Kenai Pen.  We had a great day but ended up with no fish on the boat.  It was a great way to get out and spend the day on the water and I highly recommend it to anyone that would like to experience Alaskas winter fishing.  If you would like to participate in the 2009 Homer winter king salmon derby contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com and I will get you lined up.

Spring is coming

March 27th, 2008

copy-of-hunting-055.jpgcopy-of-hunting-050.jpgThe days are getting longer and it seems that you can get a lot more done.  Two  weeks ago I visited my home town of Strasburg, VA for my grandparents 65th wedding anniversary!  It was a very nice but a short visit.  I did get a chance to fish for only a few  hours with the folks at Murrays fly shop (www.murraysflyshop.com).  We fished the north fork of the Shenandoah river throwing leaches with a slow retrieve.  I managed to land a 10-12″ smallmouth and John  landed a solid 12″ fish.  It was nice to get out and see that the fish were willing to play.

Watch out

March 12th, 2008

This winter I had a guy try to book a fishing trip in an odd month.  He presented himself as Harry J. Harry from London.  He sent a deposite that didn’t clear and asked for a refund before the check cleared.  It was an obvious scam and The check was fake.  I told him we have a great view of people fishing from the Jail house!

If you recieve an email from this guy make sure that you google internet scams/ harry j. harry and don’t be fooled by this preditor.

I will be traveling to Seatle to pick up our new 2008, 20′, Willie driftboat this weekend.  We will then make the 2605 mile journey back to Anchorage through the next week.  It is a beautiful trip and to travel it in the winter again will be a real treat.  The Canadian rockies offer scener like I’ve never seen before.  I hope to take lots of pictures and let you know how it goes.

If you ever have thought of traveling through canada on your way to Alaska, feel free to contact me and I’ll share any information that I have to make your trip one that you will not forget.
