Kasilof King Salmon fishing

July 3rd, 2008

We set out again today to try to match wits with another King salmon. We had a slow start with a few dolly varden caught and a few missed opportunities with some kings. Ahead of the tide we stuck this fish! After what seemed to be a 30 minute struggle Terry brought this beautifull King to the net. I was a great day to see a lady from the east coast that has not fished much be so proud of her catch and she should be.

Nice job Terry and we’ll try again tommorrow.

Kenai peninsula king fishing

July 1st, 2008

King fishing on the Kasilof was fair yesterday, with some bigger tides pushing in this week we are expecting the fishing to pick up even more.  The egg bite is on, most of the fish are being caught on spin and gloes with a small glob of eggs.

The Ninilchik river is now  open for the remander of the month. I recommend those that are interested in trying to catch a king salmon on the fly rod to search there. You’ll be able to find the most fish pushing in with the tides so pay attention to what’s going on there.

If you have any questions or would like to book a trip this season we are still taking bookings.  You can reach us at www.driftingonthefly.com

Thanks and tight lines

Thanks guys

June 27th, 2008

Thanks to John Colmen and Jeff Murray for making the 2008 little susitna trip a success.  John and Jeff moved the camp boat, set up camp and cooked every day.  Enjoying a great trip and just having them in camp added that much more to a great experience.  You can catch up with these guys deep in the shenandoah national park fishing for spooky brook trout or on the shenandoah rivers casting for smallmouth bass.  If you would enjoy this or if it is close to your neck of the woods look them up at www.murraysflyshop.com.

Thanks again guys and good fishing

July on the Kenai Peninsula

June 26th, 2008

Trophy trout fishing combined with sockeye salmon fishing makes for a fun day.  The Sockeye fishing should pick up again near the end of the  first week of July and be good through the second week of aug.  That has been the norm for the last few years.  These are hard fighting fish with a built in instinct to trash gear you can plan on some excitement.  If you plan to chase these fish on your own make sure that you put a little extra in your gear so the odds of getting them to shore gets a little better.

The trout bite has been very good on leeches and minnow immitations.  I like to fish a down and across drift right now with a sink tip line.  The water has been very clear but is now comming up with just a little color. If you have any questions feel free to contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com.

Thanks and tight lines

Little Su Trip

June 22nd, 2008

The trip was a success!! Everyone hooked into Kings on fly rods, the food was great and plenty of it, the weather brought clear (sunscreen was definitely needed) and hot (70’s) days and everyone learned how easy it is to fish yourself to sleep! We are planning a trip for 2009 and if you would like information on when and where as soon as it is available, please email me so I can put you on the list. We will continue to limit these trips to four people. Carlos, Glenn and Larry - Thank you, it was great!

Planning around Clamming

June 14th, 2008

planning around clammingRazor Clam digging on the beaches of the Kenai peninsula can be spectacular.  If you enjoy clams and are heading north to go fishing check the tide tables and plan your trip on the low of low tides.  Any dates with a negative tide should produce good clam digging.  Last week we had some great tides and my wife and I filled the bag with them.  The law requires you to have a fishing license to dig and you have to keep any razor clam that you pull up.  Those that get the hang of pulling up these fast, tasty guys up can keep 60 of them a day.  The average clam is about 5 inches and you can score clams up to about 8 inches.

If you have any questions about seeking clams out feel free to contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com

Thanks and good fishing,

Scott

Alaska King Salmon on the fly

June 11th, 2008

solid 30 pounderThe Kings are starting to show up in real numbers now.  I took this fish on a blue and chart. Maribou fly, Size 3/0.   A dead drift worked for this guy but sometimes you can get them on a few short strips at the end of the drift.

Good fishing and if you to would like to try your luck with a King Salmon feel free to contact me at www.driftingonthefly.com

Kings Salmon on the Fly

June 5th, 2008

King Salmon on the Fly Rod!

How about a few busted knuckles? I narrowly escaped with mine intact yesterday while King Salmon fishing one of the small streams here on the Kenai Peninsula. We were fishing about 100 yards from the saltwater and when I hooked him, he decided he didn’t like the fresh water anymore. I have to say that I have never had any fish, not even tarpon, run that hard!
The fishing has been great for this time of the year. The King Salmon are starting to increase in numbers though it has taken a little while for them to get going. It has been a cool Spring in Southcentral Alaska and this affects everything, even the salmon. This has however been my most productive Spring season with a fly rod for King Salmon though and I can only hope it keeps going that way. Are you interested in learning how to fly fish for a few tackle busting King Salmon? Give me a call 907-382-6808 and we can arrange for that to happen in short order!

Kenai Kings and Reds

May 31st, 2008

The Kings Salmon are coming into the Kenai and Kasilof in ever increasing numbers every day or so. Drift fishing has still been hit or miss depending on the day. A few Sockeye Salmon showed up in the Kenai River this week. Be sure to familiarize yourself if you plan to fish the Kenai since a lot of regulation changes are now in effect for the 2008 season. Pay special attention to the 2-Stroke Motor restrictions. June 11 will open the Kenai River Rainbow Trout Season, until then this season is closed river wide. Check out this link for details on the regulation changes.
Give me a call 907-382-6808 if you want to fish the Kenai or Kasilof, I still have a few days open in June as of tonight.

Kasilof River King Fishing

May 23rd, 2008

The Kings are showing up in fishable numbers now on the Kasilof and Kenai River.  We fished last tues. and took a beautiful fresh 20lbs. King.  We had a few other hits and caught a few Dolly Varden, Steelhead, and flounder in the tidal water.  Things are looking up and the fishing should only get better.

If you’d like to book a trip with my guide service check out our website at www.driftingonthefly.com.

Thanks and good fishing,

Scott
